Synthetic lysine analogue that interrupts plasminogen-keratinocyte interaction and reduces UV-induced prostaglandin E2, thereby decreasing melanocyte stimulation. Multiple randomised controlled trials at 2-5% topical concentration demonstrate efficacy for melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Good tolerability including on sensitive skin; no photosensitisation. Increasingly used as a non-hydroquinone brightening cornerstone.
